Sponsor a Gambian Teacher sponsors trainee teachers in The Gambia. All trainee teachers study at The School of Education at The Gambia College in Brikama for 3 years, which is a college of The University of the Gambia. Trainee teachers work full time at their schools and complete their studies at weekends and in school holidays at the college. Teachers train either in Early Childhood Development (ECD) or a Primary Teacher Certificate (PTC).

Well … we have sponsored so many teachers since we began in March 2012 that to list them all is a bit silly! So it is easier to say that we have arrived in 2020 and our total number of teachers has reached 73. Of that number 25 are the existing trainees and 7 have just started to receive sponsorship for the academic year 2020/21. Having said that, due to Covid-19 the situation is that sponsored teachers are not able to continue their training as usual at The Gambia College. We will still be supporting them financially and liaising with the ECDA as things develop. Good luck to them all!

Step by Step Nursery School is in Kitty Village near Brikama and SAGT is sponsoring the only teacher who is training there. The other teachers are all unqualified volunteers from the village, with the exception of the headteacher. Mr Nfamara is the headteacher, working on a voluntary basis as he has a job working in another school as well.
St Mathew’s Nursery School in Bessi. Ellen has moved here from the school in Buram Village which unfortunately had to close. She is the only teacher in the school which is about a one hour drive away from Brikama. Like her previous school, Ellen works in a very poor situation that SAGT are trying to improve through support from the headteachers who form the Western Division Early Childhood Development Association (ECDA) Committee: an association with a responsibility for managing educational matters in that area of The Gambia. (We are pleased to report that for her final year of sponsorship, Ellen has moved to Foni Sonita School where she is supported by another teacher, who is also the headteacher.
Xavier Nursery School, Farato in Kombo North District. Mariam is our newest sponsored teacher and works alongside other qualified teachers. The headteacher, Mr Mendy values her very highly and had no hesitation in recommending Mariam to us for teacher training sponsorship. Mr Mendy started the school in 2008 with the help of the local people.
April 2014
Kobisala Nursery and Primary School is in Sanyang Village, near Brikama. The headteacher is Mr Bojang. Kobisala School was established in 2006 as a nursery school and became a primary school in the 2012 / 2013 academic year. Currently the school has around 125 pupils.
St.Maksymillian Nursery School is in Buram Village in Foni Bintang – Karenai, one of the nine districts of The Gambia’s Western Division. This school was able to open in April 2014 due to SAGT’s sponsorship of its one trainee teacher. There is one class based in an old church in the village. The location is roughly 2 hours from Brikama, by car. (Unfortunately this school had to close – see below.)
Please note that some of the above teacher trainees have already started their training but were unable to continue without SAGT sponsorship. All teachers train for 3 years.
